Wedding Vows: How to Write Yours

Written by Meraki Team

To us, the moment when the bride and groom exchange vows are the most sacred moment among everything else. It is our favorite because it brings great excitement and happiness to the celebration. If you are still wandering around your wedding vow, find a seat in a comfortable space & lay your notebook on a table; shined with sunlight. Here are tips & ideas to put your heart into words!

What should you actually say?

There is no fixed structure for wedding vows, and there doesn’t need to be one. But if you don’t know where to start, you can think of your vows as a story. Your story. A story that gently moves through a few moments:

1. Where it all began

What was it about your partner that made you fall in love? Maybe it was something big. Or maybe it was something small like the way they laugh, the way they listen, the way they make ordinary days feel lighter. Go back to that moment when you knew. And start from there.

2. How love has changed you

Love doesn’t just bring two people together, it shapes them. Think about who you were before, and who you’ve become since. What has this relationship taught you? How has it softened you, challenged you, or helped you grow?

This is often the part that makes people feel most connected to your story because it’s real.

3. What you promise

Vows are, at their heart, promises. Not grand, perfect promises but honest ones. Maybe it’s about being there on difficult days. Maybe it’s about building a home that feels safe. Maybe it’s simply about choosing each other, again and again. The simpler it is, the more it stays.

4. The life you imagine together

There’s something beautiful about speaking your future out loud. The trips you’ve talked about. The small routines you look forward to. Even the silly plans that only the two of you understand. These details make your vows feel alive, not just meaningful, but yours.

5. Standing together, no matter what

Every journey has its challenges. And somewhere in your vows, there’s always a quiet reassurance: that no matter what comes, you won’t have to face it alone. Sometimes, the simplest words carry the most weight.

6. And in the end…

There’s nothing more timeless than saying: “I love you.” Not just once, but as something you’ll continue to say, in different ways, for the rest of your lives.

How do you actually write it?

Writing vows takes time, not because it’s complicated, but because it asks you to slow down and feel.

Here are a few ways to make that process easier.

1. Start earlier than you think

Give yourself space, ideally a few weeks before the wedding.

Not to finish it all at once, but to come back to it. To rewrite. To refine. To let the words settle into something that feels right.

2. Talk to your partner

You don’t need to share what you’ve written.

But it helps to align on tone whether your vows will be lighthearted, emotional, poetic, or simple.

This avoids that moment where one person writes a novel… and the other writes three lines.

3. Revisit your memories

Sometimes, the best way to find words is to go back.

Look at old photos. Read old messages. Think about the days that mattered.

You’ll be surprised how naturally the words start to come when you remember how it all felt.

4. Ask yourself the right questions

If you feel stuck, try starting here:

Why did I choose this person?

When did I know I loved them?

What have we been through together?

What has this relationship taught me?

What do I never want to lose?

You don’t need to answer everything. Just follow what resonates.

5. Let yourself be inspired

A line from a movie. A sentence from a book. Something a friend once said.

Inspiration is everywhere. What matters is how you make it your own.

6. And when nothing comes…

Pause. Don’t force it.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is step away, rest, and return when your mind is quieter. The right words rarely come when you rush them.

We’ve witnessed many vows. And the ones that stay with us are never the most perfect ones but the most honest ones. So take your time. Be yourself. The words from your heart will flow.

Happy planning,

With Love,
